It seemed police had instructions from the top not to allow any protest against the government’s decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti in the city. Police arrested M P Pratap Simha and other BJP activists who had gathered in front of DC office on Thursday, opposing the state government’s decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti.
As part of their state-wide protest, the BJP leaders gathered at the DC office and were observing ‘black day’ and a peaceful protest. Since they had no permission to protest, the local police rushed to the venue and asked the agitators not to take out any protest saying that they had no permission.
Irked by this, the BJP workers entered into a heated argument with police. Tension prevailed for sometime as many workers pitched their voice stating that the government was using police force to suppress their voice.
As the situation was turning bad, police arrested BJP leaders including Simha, former MLC G Madhusudhan, former MLC C H Vijaya Shankar, Nandeesh Preetham, Dr B H Manjunath, Mallappa Gowda and other workers were arrested and taken to City Armed Reserve (CAR) grounds.
The BJP members condemned the government’s decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti amidst severe criticism and tension. “The high court too had cracked its whip on the government for claiming Tipu Sultan as a freedom fighter and had questioned the need to celebrate his birth anniversary. However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is trying to appease a particular community and hence is celebrating the birth anniversary,” they said.
