The Maralukuppe and Karadikuppe tribal haadis in the taluk of Bylakuppe consists of 40 families and over 200 tribals living in an area covering two acres.
These tribal haadis lack basic facilities and are totally a neglected lot. They have no drinking water facilities, roads or even electricity. They are in perpetual fear of attack of wild animals too.
These people grow ginger and cassava for their living. But find it difficult to transport their produce to the market because of lack of roads. The prohibition of entry to outside vehicles into the area by the forest officers also add to their woes.
Recently the forest minister had stated that tribals wouldn’t be evicted from areas where they and their ancestors lived for centuries. Though this is welcomed by them it has not alleviated their woes.
President of Karnataka Adivasi Parishath welcomed the government’s decision to not to evict them from the forest. But he urged them to be provided with basic facilities so as to lead a better and quality life.
