Prime News, National (New Delhi), October 22:- The Congress high command is reportedly upset with party leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi for putting out a tweet praising Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on the crucial day of assembly election in Maharastra and Haryana.
“I personally don’t subscribe to Savarkar’s ideology but that doesn’t take away the fact that he was an accomplished man who played part in the freedom struggle, fought for Dalit rights and went to jail for the country” Abhishek Manu Singhvi had tweeted on Monday.
In damage control mode, the Rajya Sabha MP was later seen explaining his tweet on different TV channels.
Sources in the Congress confirmed to India Today that Abhishek Manu Singhvi received a call from a senior party leader about the tweet and its timing. The call was made at the behest of Congress President Sonia Gandhi who was reportedly not pleased with Singhvi’s tweet.
Singhvi, one of the Congress spokespersons, has often acted as the party’s troubleshooter.
Later, Singhvi put out another tweet which was the climb down from the first one. “The strength of Indian thinking has been inclusive. Many strands of the freedom movement have existed-one cnot agree with the jingoism or violent elements of #Savarkar’s nationalism nor with his vicious anti #Gandhism but one can accept that he was imbued by nationalist motives,” Abhishek Manu Singhvi said in another tweet.
Earlier, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, at a press conference in Mumbai, had said, “We are not against Savarkar ji, but we are not in favour of the Hindutva ideology that Savarkar ji patronised and stood for either.” Singh had noted that Indira Gandhi as prime minister issued a postal stamp in Savarkar’s memory.
This comes amid a political row over BJP’s push of Bharat Ratna for Savarkar. (MR, Inputs: Agencies).
