In a shocking incident on Tuesday, two leopards in the Bandipur National Park range were found dead.
The incident came to light when the onlookers at the Omkar Range near Hanchipura village post informed the forest officials. It is alleged that the villagers had poisoned a half-eaten carcass of a dog which was lying on the spot after an attack by the leopards.
According to Chamarajnagar District Forest Wildlife Warden Naveen Kumar who inspected the spot, told ‘City Today’ that, “On Monday night leopards had attacked a dog and had eaten half of the animal. It is alleged that the villagers had poisoned the carcass of the dog. The two leopards that came in search of food had eaten the poisoned meat and were found dead later.”
Both the cubs aged about one year were of the same mother, in which one was a black panther and the other a spotted leopard. A Forest Offence Case (FOC) has been registered at Hulahalli Police station and the accused would face an imprisonment up to 10 years. ACF Poovaiah, Dr Nagaraju and other forest officials inspected the spot.
