Two rapists sentenced to life imprisonment

Actor Darshan’s photo at the back of an auto rickshaw driven by the accused nailed the rapists

The Seventh Additional District and Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced two rapists to life imprisonment. On Monday, Judge Chandrasekhar pronounced them guilty of raping an Assamese woman.

Public Prosecutor Mahantappa argued the case and called for stringent punishment.

Puttaswamy, a poultry farm worker, and Shankara, a hotel employee, both residents of Kushalnagar in Kodagu were found guilty of rape, outraging the modesty of a woman, theft and destroying evidence.

In 2014, the accused had raped the woman from Assam who worked in a circus company as a bicycle stuntwoman. The woman was returning to her hometown to attend to her ailing father when the accused raped her. One more woman accompanying the victim managed to escape. The accused, after committing the crime, had left the scene in an auto rickshaw.

The case in this regard was filed in Piriyapatna two weeks after the incident, after the woman returned from Assam. It was a challenging case for Piriyapatna Inspector Prasanna Kumar as the woman did not know Kannada and she could neither identify the accused nor was able to give their description.

Based on a single clue that the back of the auto rickshaw had the photo of actor Darshan, Prasanna Kumar started a wild goose chase and started screening the autos in Piriyapatna and Kushalnagar. He was able to locate the auto and managed to arrest one of the accused who spilled the beans. The second accused was arrested later.

Blurb: Convicting the accused, Judge Chandrasekhar remarked: “Film actor Darshan, who is in news both on-screen and off-screen of late, proved to be a hero for the rape survivor, and villain to the wrongdoers in this case.”

Advocate C H Jagadeesh had argued for the accused.
