UoM Centenary Celebrations to conclude today

Vice President of India Hamid Ansari to deliver valedictory address today at 5 pm.

It’s almost time now. The year-long centenary celebrations that had the University of Mysore (UoM) soaked up in festive fervour will culminate this evening with the Vice President of India Mohammad Hamid Ansari delivering the valedictory address at the UoM’s Amphitheatre at 5 pm.

Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Rudrabhai Vala, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. District In-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa, Minister for Higher Education Basavaraja Rayareddy and Chairman, University Grants Commission, Ved Prakash are expected to share the stage.

The last preparations are underway as the stage decorators were seen busy embellishing the stage with colourful flowers. “We want to make sure the stage resembles a flower garden. We have used more than 1,000 bunches of flowers to make the stage look attractive,” said a person arranging the flowers.

Besides, a special Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and Dog Squad which have come from Bengaluru were examining the surrounding area of the stage as well as the venue. This was in addition to the beefed up security measures that the city police had taken to ensure everything goes smoothly.

“We have received strict orders from the higher officials to ensure everything is correct. Stringent security checks are underway since Thursday and will go on throughout the day,” one of the officials attached to Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad told ‘City Today.’

City Police have deployed additional forces which have been summoned from neighbouring districts. One SP, 3 DySPs, 15 Inspectors, 25 SIs, 200 Head Constables and 10 platoons each of CAR and KSRP have been deployed to keep vigil, besides restricting movement of vehicles around the venue.

City Police Commissioner B Dayannada told ‘City Today’ that necessary security measures had been taken for the Vice President’s visit. Security has also been beefed up along VP’s route from Mandakalli Airport to UoM, to avoid any untoward incidents.

It may be recalled here that a boy had blocked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s car when he was on his way to inaugurate the Indian Science Congress held at the UoM in January this year as part of centenary celebrations.

A six-day cultural extravaganza starting from today is also the part of valedictory of UoM’s centenary celebrations.

Vice President Hamid Ansari’s schedule

Hamid Ansari will arrive at Mandakalli Airport through a special flight from New Delhi today at around 4:30 pm and head to UoM Amphitheatre where he will deliver the valedictory address at 5 pm. He will stay overnight at Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel. Ansari will inaugurate the newly constituted JSS Science and Technology University on Saturday at SJCE at 11 am and leave for Delhi at 12.30 pm.

Statue unveiling

The Vice President will unveil the life-size statue of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar at the premises of Crawford Hall.  A bust of Sir M Visvesvaraya, who was instrumental in the founding of UoM, will also be unveiled inside Crawford Hall.
