Spreading Basavanna’s message of “Work is Worship”, Vishwamanava Employees Association of University of Mysore felicitated achievers from various fields and 460 scholars during Basava Jayanti organised at Maharaja Centenary Hall here on Thursday.
Inaugurating the event, Revenue and District In-Charge Minister V Srinivas Prasad said that the thoughts of Basavanna were universal and were not limited to a particular community.
“People should not restrict philosophers to a particular caste. Instead, their messages must be followed by one and all. Their teachings are worth emulating by the humanity,” he said.
“Followers of great philosophers have to understand the inner meanings without restricting them to particular caste and community. Basavanna struggled hard to bring equality in the society. His revolutionary ideas and literature are similar to that of Karl Marx,” the minister said.
“Buddhism is Asia’s light that is spread across the world. The religion adopts a scientific approach and highlights human values. Sadly, the Buddhism has not developed to its fullest potential in the country where it was born. This is mainly due to lack of understanding,” he felt.
“Dr B R Ambedkar understood Buddhism and its values that helped in eradicate caste-based discriminations and he went on promoting the religion. After Emperor Ashoka, it was Ambedkar who popularised the religion,” he said.
Minister for Cooperatives and Sugar H S Mahadeva Prasad, Chamarajanagar MP Dhruvanarayana, University of Mysore Gandhi Bhavan Director Professor S Shivarajappa, Suttur Mutt seer Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamy, UoM Evaluation Registrar R Rajanna, Vishwamanava Employees Association President Harish Gowda were present.
