Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering wins laurels at go-kart national event

Imperial Society of Innovative Engineers in association with Tech Imperial, JK Tyre Motorsports, FMSCI (Federation of Motor sports Clubs of India) and Sri Krishna College Of Engineering and Technology jointly organised a four-day national level Go-Kart championship titled Indian Karting 16(IKR-16) at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, recently.

A group of 17 students under the aegis of Team Falcon represented Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering, Mysuru at ISIE Indian Karting-2016. It was for the first time that a team from VVCE ventured into motorsports events of any kind. As many as 54 teams from across the country tookpart in the four day event out of 80+ registered teams. Team Falcon successfully bagged 3 major awards for dynamic events namely Best Autocross, Best Skidpad and also the Best Driver Award. The team was also awarded a cash prize totaling to Rs 30,000 for all the events.

The college, in order to encourage and support the venture, granted funds of Rs 1.5 lakh. Also the parents supported the team by bearing the initial expenses of team during the formative stages. Later, the team was sponsored by various organisations like Adarsha Super specialty Chemicals Pvt Ltd., Vijaya Bank, Bhima Brother Jewelers and Syndicate Bank based on their effective presentation and CAD Models.

With encouragement pouring in from various corners and suggestions of inspiring minds, the team began fabricating the kart from July immediately after their semester exams and worked day in and day out to successfully fabricate the chassis within the campus in the mechanical workshop.

The design in itself was unique and non-conventional and followed all the rules of the competition. The vehicle was constructed keeping in mind the weight distribution, handling, ergonomics, driver comfort and high performance. The team used an asymmetric chassis design, high quality materials, a continuous variable transmission and even designed the fiber glass fairings themselves.


The team presented their design for technical inspection. The kart was thoroughly inspected for minute faults and was asked to make only a few adjustments. After clearing the Technical Inspection (TI), the team reported for braking and acceleration test wherein they cleared the test successfully and were placed 5th amongst the 33 teams that cleared the TI. They were then directed to skid pad test wherein the team scored a record lap of 21.87 seconds to emerge as the winners. Autocross test was held subsequently where the team proved their mettle and confidence by creating another record lap of 28.54 seconds to bag the autocross award. Based on the skills displayed during the entire event, the driver of team Falcon was adjudged the best amongst all the participating teams. They then successfully cleared the endurance test in under 12 minutes which culminated the proceedings of the championship. The efforts of the team along with their unique design were appreciated by all the inspectors and participants from variousother colleges spanning the length and breadth of the country.

There was also alumni placement drive in which 4 students – Shreyas Koushik, Ritesh N Joshi, Thrishool R and Rahul R Nayak cleared the group discussion round and qualified for the personal interview of which the results are awaited.
