“The residents of Yaragamballi of Yalandur taluk are suffering due to quarrying in the village. Villagers have complained against the mining to the district and taluk administration. “If they do not intervene and stop mining, we will stage protest for an indefinite period,” said Yaragamballi Parashivamurthy, district president of Bhrashtachara Virodhi Andolana Vedike.
He was speaking at a press meet held at Yalandur. “The mining is spoiling the peace of mind of the public. There are houses and agricultural fields and school in the vicinity of mining. From the mining fields, ground water which can be used by 20 pump sets are wasted. Polluted water from the mining field is diverted to Gumballi lake, causing the death of fish. The mining field is close to the tiger reserve, but the forest department is not saying anything about it. The owners of the mine field are trying to create chaos among the villagers, yet no action has been against them,” he alleged.
