Villagers lock Chennakeshava Temple at Somanathapura; demand funds for construction of houses

Mysuru, August 1:- The famous Chennakeshava Temple at Somanathapura of T Narasipura temple has been locked by the villagers.

Villagers of Somanathapura have locked the temple and are staging an indefinite agitation against the  governemnt and the Department of Archaeology.

They alleged that they were not provided funds for the construction of houses. In 2010, the central government had instructed that houses can’t be constructed within 100 metres radius of the temple. The villagers were allowed to construct houses 100 metres away from the temple premises, but only 13 people have been granted permission to construct houses so far. The villagers said that they are still living in houses that may collapse at any moment.

Thousands of devotees throng the temple every day, including tourists from foreign countries. They had to return disappointed as the temple gates remain locked.

Villagers have threatened to take up cooking inside the temple premises and start residing if their demands are not met soon. (KS, NGB)
