Ward 58 bypoll tomorrow

Bypoll to Mysuru City Corporation’s (MCC) ward number 58 will be held on Sunday. The elections has been necessitated by the death of R Ananthu, Congress corporator.

Polling will be held from 7 am to 5 pm and repolling, if necessary, will be held on July 12. Counting of votes will be taken at 8 am on July 13. Zonal Commissioner of MCC’s Zone 2 T Javaregowda will be the election officer while MCC’s Zone 5 Revenue officer Gavi Siddaiah will be the assistant election officer.

Congress party has fielded Manjunath Ashwini, wife of the late R Ananthu, following whose death the by-election is being held, is contesting as a rebel candidate. G Manju, Dasara exhibition contractor G Manju is contesting from the JD(S), Suresh Raju is contesting from BJP and Amjad Khan is contesting from SDPI.

There are 7 polling booths and all of them have been identified as sensitive ones. The Nazarbad police officials would oversee polling security and 10 constables have been posted at each polling station.

In all, there are 30 polling officials and on Saturday, they took the Electronic Voting Machines, indelible ink and related documents from the MCC office to the respective polling booths.

Ward 58 falls under Narasimharaja Constituency and comprises Raghavendra Nagar and the areas around Kendriya Vidyalaya. The constituency is represented by Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait.

The ward was earlier called Ward Number 57 and was represented by former mayor H N Srikantaiah. And when it was changed as Ward Number 59, Srikantaiah’s wife H M Shanthakumari won the elections and went on to be the deputy mayor.

The ward again changed to number 58 and R Ananthu contested and won as an Independent candidate. In 2013, he was elected as a Congress candidate.

The ward has over 6,101 voters and there is a sizable population of Muslims. Even though Ananthu was popular among masses as he initiated a lot of development works, Manjunath is close to Tanveer Sait and the Congress party has claimed credit for development works. Ashwini is banking on sympathy vote and is using the popularity of her late husband to garner votes.
