Mysuru, July 18:- “We are lagging behind in thinking abilities. We have not expressed our thinking in a proper way. Discussions are not taking place in the education system,” said MLC Arun Shahapura.
He was speaking on a discussion on ‘National Education Policy 2019’ at the auditorium of University Law School, Manasagangothri here on Wednesday.
“We are discussing Macaulay education system in India. But we have not made an effort to come out of Macaulay education system. We need to have an India-centred education. Looking at the educational history, we have been educationally backward. We get better knowledge when we visit the world. How many have got education for satisfying their self? Dr BR Ambedkar has given the best Constitution for India. Many have opined that the Constitution was against universal education. This education policy is also not the last one. It has to be studied several times,” he said.
“Clear-cut suggestions should be given for education policy. When MLA N Mahesh was the education minister, he had told in the budget book that LKG and UKG will be introduced in government schools. I had then questioned the chief minister in the Assembly whether the government is starting a Montessori model. The government should have used the term pre-primary. Is there no seriousness about education? Are the officials unaware of the difference between Montessori and pre-primary education?” he added.
“Brain of a child quickly develops until the age of 5. The new education policy says that children can have access to education after the age of 3. They should be taught letters and numbers. Chapter 6 of the policy advocates equality in education. If 60,000 candidates pass TET, only 3,000 get the job of teachers. We have to look at the quality of the teachers,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore (UoM) Prof G Hemanth Kumar inaugurated the event.
The national chief secretary of ABRSM Shivananda Sindhanakera, director of the law school Prof C Basavaraju, UoM Syndicate member Lingaraj, head of the Department of Kannada Prof Vishwanath, Prof GC Rajanna and others were present. (MR/GK)
