Mysuru, September 29:- Heart diseases are one of the major causes of mortality in India and it is increasingly affecting the younger generation. A disease that was predominantly seen in the age group of 40-60 has now started affecting under 40. In the last 10 years, there has been an increase of over fifty per cent cases amongst under-40 age group.
Coronary heart disease is one of the major conditions in our country followed by hypertension-related heart diseases, rheumatic heart disease and cardiomyopathy.
At Narayana Health City, we witness at least 700-800 out patients with heart related issues in Out Patient Department (OPD). We also see an average of 20 cases that require emergency care within 24 hours in a day, out of which 4-5 cases are heart attack.
Sedentary lifestyle, increased consumption of processed food, lifestyle habits like consumption of alcohol and smoke are the major cause for increasing cases of heart issues.
To prevent and control heart conditions, one must ensure proper diet, exercise regularly and go for annual heath check-ups to avoid emergency situations. (Dr Sanjay Mehrotra, Senior Consultant Cardiology, Narayana Health City)
