Work on Maharajas’ cricket ground to begin soon

The ground breaking ceremony (bhoomi puja) of the Maharaja’s college cricket grounds took place in city on Thursday.

University of Mysore and Karnataka State cricket association (KSCA) had recently signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop the college cricket ground. 

UoM Vice-Chancellor Prof K S Rangappa and President of KSCA Ashok Anand took part in the eremony held at the college premises. As per the MoU, KSCA will develop the cricket stadium and would maintain it for a period of 23 years. Speaking to media persons,  Anand said, “Maharaja cricket ground is significant. We are thankful to the UoM for joining hands with us to come up with a top-notch cricket ground in the city that will have all the basic facilities and required infrastructure. The basic work will start as soon as possible and the development of ground will happen stage by stage. The ground can also be used to conduct league matches, Vijay Hazare Trophy matches and if possible we would also conduct Ranji matches in future.”

Speaking to City Today, Convenor of KSCA, Mysore Zone, Balachandar said, “The association will start the work in a few days and initially the fencing process would be completed. The fencing process would be done in the allotted area of the ground which covers the sight screen on both the sides of the ground. Later, turf wickets will be laid, pavilion will be constructed. In due course, we would also come up with spectacular gallery. The development of the cricket ground would take at least 5 years but matches can be held in the next eight months.

“This is the same ground where eminent cricket players like EAS Prasanna, B S Chandrasekhar, G R Vishwanath, Javagal Srinath and many others have played. The ground will be a great platform to conduct conduct U-16, U-19 matches and many other tournaments,” he added.  

Speaking on the occasion, Prof K S Rangappa said, “The new stadium will be another feather in the cap of the university and we hope development of the cricket ground happens in time.”

Registrar C Basavaraju, In-charge, Director of Department of Physical education Dr Krishnaiah, Former Director of Physical education department university of Mysore Dr C Krishna, CEO of KSCA Ganesh, Zonal coordinator of KSCA K V Shashidar and others were present.
