Mysuru, March 03:- “Proper planning is essential for better utilisation of natural resources like land, water, soil. The merging discipline of Geographical Information System (GIS) is very helpful in this regard,” said Dr Arun Das, Associate Professor, DoS in Geography, Manasagangothri.
He was addressing the gathering at a two-day workshop on GIS Application and Spatial Planning, organised by the Department of Geography and IQAC, SBRR Mahajana First Grade College.
Speaking on the wide applications of GIS, he said it can be used in urban planning, mapping, disaster management and mitigation, space utilisation, soil mapping and cropping pattern.
“GIS is an application of both knowledge and technical know-how”, said Dr Das.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Purnachandra Thejaswi J, Joint Director, Department of Collegiate Education, Mysuru and said that there are a lot of job opportunities in the field of GIS.
The participants in the workshop were also made to work on the practical aspects of the GIS application. They were made to work on crop suitability analysis, identifying potential groundwater zone, and flood susceptibility zones.
Dr K K Somashekar, Head, Department of Geography, spoke about the objectives of the workshop.
He said the aim of the workshop is to equip teacher participants with the use of GIS and its application which in turn would be passed on to the students which help them gain skills that would make them employable.
R Vasudeva Murthy, President, Mahajana Education Society presided. Hon. Secretary Dr Vijayalakshmi Muralidhar graced the occasion. Dr S Venkataramu, Principal, Dr Doddarasaiah G, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Geography, Sunil N and others were present. -(KK)
