World Disability Day: Let us make it ‘special’

Specially-abled children were happy to the core on International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Saturday as they showcased their dancing skills and received prizes they won in various events organised by the District Administration, Women and Child Welfare Department and the Department of Disabled and Senior Citizens’ Welfare.

As part of World Disability Day, cultural and sports events were organised wherein the children took active part and showcased their exceptional skills. More than 300 children received prizes at a programme organised to celebrate World Disability Day.

While over 700 children, all with some form of disability, participated in sports events, the cultural events saw an attendance of more than 400 participants from 15 different schools participated in the competitions.

Speaking after distributing prizes, Deputy Commissioner D Randeep drew parents’ attention towards various government schemes meant for people with disability and urged them to make use of all the schemes.

“The state government was striving for the betterment of specially-abled persons and had dedicated three percent of the budget for their welfare. Every parent should be aware of all the schemes and facilities provided by the government and get benefited from them,” the DC said.

He said that a committee under his watch was looking after the effective implementation of the schemes in the district and ensuring the schemes reach the beneficiaries.

Around 500 specially-abled children along with their parents attended the World Disability Day celebration.

Zilla Panchayat President Nayeema Sultana, Deputy Directory, Women and Child Welfare Department, Mysuru, K RadhaMysore Paints and Varnish Ltd (MPVL) Chairman H A Venkatesh, Mysuru Zoo Authority Chairperson Mallige Veeresh and others were present.
