World No Tobacco Day: Awareness vehicle flagged off

Mysuru, June 1:- Zilla Panchayat, District Health and Family Welfare Society and District Tobacco Control Cell observed World No Tobacco Day to create awareness regarding the hazards of tobacco consumption at the premises of NCP Hospital here on Monday.

District Health Officer (DHO) Dr R Venkatesh flagged off the awareness vehicle on the occasion.

“Awareness is being created among the public regarding the health issues caused by tobacco consumption. We are concentrating on youths to protect them from tobacco and nicotine. The motto of World No Tobacco Day 2020 is the protection of youths,” he said.

“Every year, 8 million people lose lives because of tobacco consumption. 7 million die because of tobacco and 1 million due to passive smoking. 9 million people suffer from health issues every year due to tobacco consumption,” he added.

“According to the global survey 1 and 2 of tobacco consumption, tobacco consumption has come down from 28.2% to 22.8% among adults. District Tobacco Control Cell has registered 1,359 cases under COTPA and collected a fine of Rs 2,35,380,” he added. (MR/KS)
