Wresting competition to mark Urs’ birth centenary

Nearly 60 wrestlers from across the country will vie for top honours in the wrestling competition to be held on the occasion of D Devaraja Urs birth centenary on August 14.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, convenor of Devaraja Urs Birth Centenary Celebration Committee, H A Venkatesh said, “Like every year, we are organising wrestling competition in which wrestlers from across the country will participate. For the first time, we have decided to hold competition for women.”

Wrestlers including Satyandar and Som Veer from Haryana, Asim from Delhi, Santhosh Darod from Kollapura, Karthik Kate from Davanagere and others will participate.

Winners will be honoured with a cash prize, a certificate, while the best wrestlers will be awarded with a silver cup.

Backward class welfare department district officer Somashekar said that the department has taken up awareness campaign to introduce D Devaraja Urs works to the public. A tableaux displaying the achievements of Urs will start journey from Bidar and culminate in Bengaluru on August 18, he added.
