YKC Wadiyar opposes MCC decision to demolish Devaraja Market

Mysuru, February 15:- Titular king of Mysuru, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar has expressed his opposition to the decision of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) to demolish the Devaraja Market building on Sayyaji Rao Road in the city.

He was talking to media persons in the city on Saturday

“Devaraja Market is a heritage building. It should be protected as it is. Except for Prof Rangaraju, there were no experts in the committee of experts formed to study the status of the market. The report of the committee to demolish the building itself is unscientific,” he said.

“Excepting Rangaraju, everyone else in the committee is a civil engineer. Prof Rangaraj is an archaeologist. Civil engineers know only about concrete buildings and not heritage buildings. Opinion has to be collected from professional architects, but the report of this committee cannot be accepted,” he said.

“The court has not given any verdict regarding the heritage building. It had suggested the MCC form a committee and make a  decision based on its opinion. But it has not directed the MCC to demolish the building. I don’t agree with what the Mayor Tasneem Bano and MCC Commissioner Gurudatta Hegde are saying. This issue can be sorted through discussion,” Yaduveer Wadiyar added. (MR/KS)
