Mysuru, October 6:- There was pandemonium at Zilla Panchayat meeting here on Tuesday (October 6) when some members wanted to observe silence as a mark of respect to the rape and murder victim of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh. Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) members supported the suggestion while some Bharatiya Janata Party members were against it.
Congress ZP member Dr Pushpa B Amarnath said silence should be observed before the meeting commences. She was supported by Beerihundi Basavanna. But BJP’s Rangaswamy opposed it vehemently, saying it is not binding on the members to observe silence. The members from the three parties were engaged in a verbal duel for some time. Another member Chandrika Suresh asked Rangaswamy to go out if he was not interested. Both the members argued for some time before permission was granted.
The members also argued over pure drinking water project. Many complained that the water tank has not been cleaned for years and no official was bothered to look into it. They wanted the authorities to pay attention to the project. ZP Chief Executive Officer D Bharathi said, “If the funds from SEP and TSP are utilised for another project, it is an offence. If there is any corruption in the drinking water project, we will take action.” (MR/KS)
